I drove to Boise from Cascade after spending several days in central Idaho.

Boise Airport is only about 15 minutes away by car, making it one of the easiest destination races I've done.

The location completely changed the race weekend experience. I walked to packet pickup, dinner, and the start/finish area, eliminating race-morning stress.
I'd absolutely stay here again.
📦 Packet Pickup & Volunteering
Packet pickup was held outside Payette Brewing Company.
I volunteered the evening before, which helped me become familiar with the start and finish area before race morning.
🍝 Pre-Race Dinner
Alavita
Boise, Idaho

- Dinner
- What I ordered
- Fresh pasta
- Verdict
- One of the best pre-race restaurants within walking distance of the race.
Excellent handmade pasta and an easy walk from Hotel 43. This would be my recommendation for anyone running the Boise Half.
🌧️ Race Morning
Originally the forecast looked cool and dry.
Instead, it rained for almost the entire race.
I went shirtless expecting sunshine and ended up completely soaked, especially my shoes and socks.
Fortunately, staying downtown meant there was no stressful early drive or parking situation.
Don't Trust the Forecast
Race morning turned into steady rain despite a favorable forecast.
- Severity
- Important
Bring a lightweight rain jacket or at least a dry change of clothes. I expected sunshine, raced shirtless, and finished completely soaked.
🏃 Course
Compared to Grand Teton and Yellowstone, Boise felt refreshingly flat.
The lower elevation and smoother terrain made it much easier to settle into goal pace.
There were a couple moments where course markings and turns caused slight confusion, but volunteers were excellent and aid stations were plentiful.
Take Advantage of the Walkability
Stay downtown and skip race-morning driving entirely.

Walking to packet pickup, dinner, and the start made this one of the most relaxing race weekends I've had.

I finished in 1:28:48 (6:47/mile).
That was good for:
- 10th overall
- 2nd in my age group
After two consecutive high-altitude races, it was satisfying to finally feel my pace return.
🍔 Post-Race Food
After celebrating at the finish, I drove about 1½ hours to McCall to spend the afternoon exploring the lake.
I stopped at Ice Cream Alley for a sundae. They're cash only, and I came up a few dollars short. A stranger kindly covered the difference, turning into one of the nicest memories of the entire trip.
Later that evening I returned to:
Alavita
Boise, Idaho
- Best for
- Dinner
- What I ordered
- Rigatoni with truffle butter
- Verdict
- Even better after finishing 13.1 miles.
The rigatoni was outstanding. I also tried the fennel and arugula salad, which I probably wouldn't order again.
💡 Things I Would Do Differently
- Pack for rain even if the forecast looks favorable.
- Stay downtown again.
- Spend an extra day exploring Boise's Greenbelt.
- Visit McCall earlier in the day instead of after racing.
Overall Verdict
Boise is one of the easiest destination half marathons I've done.
Walkable hotels, excellent food, simple race logistics, and a fast course make it an outstanding choice for runners chasing a PR or checking Idaho off their 50-state journey. It was an excellent way to finish my Wyoming–Montana–Idaho road trip.
